Commentary by V. Vale:
“Before Punk Rock happened, Genesis P-Orridge was heavily ensconced in the small but international “Mail Art” underground movement, in which strangers sent each other hand-decorated, modified and personalized “mailable” artworks and received similar artworks in exchange, outside of the museum and gallery system (i.e., outside of capitalism). I had a small correspondence with him before I printed an interview with his pioneering band, “Throbbing Gristle” in my 1978 Search & Destroy number six. Throbbing Gristle didn’t come to San Francisco until 1981, and traveling on a budget, Genesis and at least bandmate Cosey were staying with the artist Monte Cazazza and partner Tana Emmolo in Oakland. Tana worked at a vintage clothing store nearby and had brought home many antique-clothing treasures, including these fetish bright white high heeled shoes.
Genesis saw them and immediately tried them on and to his surprise and delight discovered that the shoes fit him perfectly. His happiness was immediately captured by me in this photograph. Any photographer knows that the hardest “thing” to capture is a GENUINE smile; most humans are sufficiently practiced as to provide a simulated-smile whenever a camera is aimed at them, but THE REAL DEAL is actually quite rare…”
