Commentary by V. Vale:
“It took a bit of organization to get a handful of my gun-owning friends to show up at the same time at Chabot Range in the low hllls of OAKLAND, but the idea that William Burroughs was showing up provided an incentive to, you know, get off work and rearrange schedules. In this photo, the non-gun-owing artist Paul Mavrides is squtting in front. Immediately to Burroughs’s side is Mindaugis Bagdon, a long-time gun aficionado who provided a number of firearms for people to shoot. The San Francisco socialite Carmella Scaggs is shown brandishing a Ruger .22 caliber pistol, and next to her is an old friend named G.B. Carson who worked on Search & Destroy magazine from the get-go. As few people owned cars, it took some logistics to get everybody there in one piece, but obviously it happened. Note that W.S. Burroughs is wearing a brand-new pair of the then-“trendy” earth shoes. But Burroughs almost always looked like a classic gentlemen oblivious to fads and fashion…”
