Commentary by V. Vale:
“One of the earliest, archetypal New York Punk firestarters was Lydia Lunch, who at age sixteen ran away to Manhattan to start a very early “Punk” band called Teenage Jesus and the Jerks. In 1979 I met Lydia briefly when she showed up at the Mabuhay Gardens and Mark Pauline ignited a thunderous explosion to welcome her to San Francisco. But for some time Lydia has repudiated the “Punk” label, insisting that her and her friends were “No Wave”, not “Punk”. As I wrote in my introduction to my LYDIA LUNCH baby book, “Ms. Lunch has expressed herself in writing, songwriting, acting in films, producing art photography and video, gallery installations, Spoken Word, (anti-) poetry, (anti-) theater, and magazine/book editing/publishing. She has contributed interviews, essays and prefaces to a host of publications. And we recommend her enlightening cookbook, The Need to Feed…
