Commentary by V. Vale:
“In late 1980 I met Kathy Acker while working the cash register at the entrance to City Lights Bookstore. She introduced herself by handing me an “appropriation” of issue number one of my RE/Search tabloid (11″x17″ newspaper format). She had superimposed her own text in a rectangle on top of each page, and of course had not asked permission to do this. I was immediately both amazed and delighted, and she gave me a handful of copies to take home (now they’re scarce as hen’s teeth).
“Very soon Kathy asked me to publish a book by her, and being perhaps too easily charmed by her, agreed. It took awhile to typeset and do the layout, so Kathy visited numerous times to check on the progress, and to proofread the typescript galleys (I had a typesetting shop inside my home, complete with stat camera and processor). On one occasion Kathy was wearing a brilliantly-white jacket, so I snapped this photograph of her standing in my doorway.
“Chris Kraus has written briefly about my experience with Kathy Acker in her recently-published biography titled After Kathy Acker. I leave it to the reader to find that! Not long afterward, Kathy moved to New York City and became much more famous. All too soon she died prematurely of a form of cancer. R.I.P.”
