"Carolyn Brandt, the Queen of Cult's career is shown via film clips from
her entire movie log. Starting with "Goof on the Loose" (1959) to "The Hollywood
Strangler Meets the Skid Row Slasher" (1980). Miss Brandt's films when seen
in documentary style will astound and surprise you. A very special event
about a very special lady." For the die-hard Carolyn Brandt fan, this video is a must. "Queen of Cult" presents cuts of scenes Carolyn features in from movies made from the years of 1962 until 1979 with producer, director and actor Ray Dennis Steckler, who was also her husband for over 16 years. The video begins by introducing each of the films with one feature cut that tells what film it is and when it was produced, and then goes on to show various scenes from each movie in a more free-style format. For those not familiar with Brandt's work, she could be described as a pioneering actress of the low-budget, independent B-movie genre. Her roles vary from that of the stereotypical, hapless (headless!) female victim, to blood-sucking space alien (the original Morticia?), to psychopathic slasher. While the film quality is not the greatest, these cuts make up for that by highlighting a career dedicated to originality which was, for its time, extremely radical. Steckler and Brandt believed strongly in creating from the heart of personal inspiration, and to hell with hollywood. One can see how much fun was had creating these scenes. There is a sense of complicity with the viewer, a 'human-ness,' that can only be acheived outside of the homogeneity of mainstream hollywood filmmaking. Recommended for the fan and the B-movie buff alike. More about Brandt and Steckler can be found in RE:SEARCH Volume 10: Incredibly Strange Films. --review by Julie Generic |
