|CHARLES GATEWOOD EVENING CO-PRESENTED BY CITY LIGHTS THIS SUNDAY (tomorrow)
Sorry for the late notice, but Charles Gatewood will be at Vesuvio Cafe, 255 Columbus near Broadway (right next to City Lights on Jack Kerouac alley), to celebrate the release of his new book, Badlands (Goliath) on Sunday July 9th at 5 PM. There will be a slide show and talk by Charles and he'll be available to answer questions. This being a bar, you must be 21 to attend. Badlands contains over 350 photos and is so far the definitive Gatewood photograph book containing shots of bikers, fetish girls, tattoos, piercing, William S. Burroughs, and blood sports.
SHARON LEONG, THE QUEEN OF B PAINTINGS
Sharon Leong, Queen of B Paintings had a marvelous show of her work at Jezebel's on Larkin Street at Turk. We attended early in the show before the crowds must have arrived and had a chance to do a video interview with her talking about her work. Sharon: "I've been painting ever since I was born." These are luridly colorful acrylic tubal paintings, medium-sized format, subject matter with various degrees of sexual content. Blow-up dolls are sympathetically depicted alongside of aggressors, victims, dominatrices and other various participants. We hope to make some of this available soon.
MARTIN DENNY CONCERT IN HONOLULU
Martin Denny just turned 89 (he was born April 5, 1991) and he's doing a big show this month. We wish we could make it! We saw him several years ago with the Honolulu Orchestra in the Waikiki Band Shell and were blown away. If anyone can make it July 21st, please say hello to Marty for us. He loves his fans-- when in San Francisco shortly after the concert, he spent hours signing albums for friends at the Romolo office. The night before he had sat in unannounced at Pearl's on Columbus Avenue. We were less than a block away, and missed it, unaware-- it was just spontaneous fun to him. Keep going Marty! See a picture of Martin Denny at http://www.vsearchmedia.com/latest/mdfans.shtml.
JELLO BIAFRA's TRIAL
Vale's article on Jello Biafra's trial, heavily edited with an eye toward "mainstream" press values, will appear in the Tower Pulse August issue, free at all Tower Records stores. It should be in the stores the last week of July. Says Vale: "The trial is slated for appeal, but at this point it looks like Biafra has been swindled out of his song copyrights, thanks to signing a 1991 piece of paper he thought was valid only in the event that any of the 4 ex-members got hit by a truck. Caveat: never sign anything you don't fully understand, especially if it's drafted by someone you intuitively suspect is really your envious, competitive enemy. Ah, if only this really were the Wild West where we could exact true frontier justice!"
TATTOO CD ROM
There is a little known CD rom available on our website. It's a wonderful image-laden piece, beautifully put together. It's for PC only. Please see it at http://www.vsearchmedia.com/cds/wotprod.shtml.
From the Tattoo Museum in Amsterdam, this CD Rom features more than 1000 pictures of famous rock stars, the most tattooed man in the world, beauties, babes, and bikers, as well as video clips, a screen saver, and a puzzle. If you use Windows 95 or higher, this is for you. Sorry, no MAC version.
YOU CAN HELP INDEPENDENT PUBLISHING, AND BE A WRITER!
We were recently informed by a bookstore that Amazon.com has become the new "Books in Print." "Books in Print" used to be (probably still is on a dusty lower shelf somewhere) a huge set of books with thousands of pages which was published each year and which contained a list of all the books officially in print in the USA. Then there was the CD rom, a list updated quarterly perhaps, that bookstores would refer to when a customer asked for an unfamiliar title. Now it turns out that the booksellers and orderers just go to their modem or DSL connected computer and dial up Amazon. Not only do the listings contain full color book cover, ISBN number, number of pages, etc, but there is also room for "reviews by readers." That's where you come in. If you've read and enjoyed a RE/Search book, DON'T BUY ANOTHER ONE THROUGH AMAZON TO SEND TO YOUR PEN PAL, but DO write a review of the book to post on Amazon! This, we would consider helpful guerilla marketing, and would really appreciate. Then you can order your gift copy from our website!
FRENCH MODERM PRIMITIVES TRANSLATION
Changer le Corps? from La Musardine, Paris is out now, and we have exactly three (3) copies for sale for $25 plus $4 shipping. This includes several interview excerpts from Modern Primitives as well as articles on trans-sexualism, penis modification, body building, extreme facial plastic surgery, and more, all in French, of course. Charles Gatewood also has his own section with an article and portfolio. For a complete list of articles, please watch http://www.vsearchmedia.com/cds/changfeat.shtml. This should be posted Monday, July 10.
GARAGE SALE, COMING UP
The quasi-quarterly RE/Search garage sale will be coming up- we think July 15th, watch Craig's List and Squidlist for further information. Upon changing distributors, we were confronted with a full pallet of "returns", "hurts", whatever you want to call them, they are books shopworn at corporate chain booksellers and they will be sold at up to a 75% discount. (If they're REALLY bad, we throw 'em away, so don't worry.) Perfect time to COMPLETE your RE/Search Library, or buy books for Xmas or birthdays, whatever. Come visit and "hang out"! If you would like to be on garage-sale notification elist, please email us at email@example.com.
VALE GOES TO THE MOVIES: DISCREET CHARM OF THE BOURGEOISIE & PECKER
Luis Bunuel (my favorite filmmaker) made "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie" which recently played at the Castro Theater (San Francisco's most beautifully preserved cinema, featuring live organ performances nightly). The film was just re-released in a brand-new print with new and greatly improved subtitles which finally capture the original wit and political edge. Especially noteworthy were the massacre of the stars, the visit to the land of the dead, and the restaurant debacle. We hope the new improved version gets released on video.
Speaking of video, I also viewed John Waters' "Pecker," another up-to-the-minute critique of irony culture and the gallery/museum star-making (and star-f***ing-over) machinery. Best of all was the full-length running commentary on the film which appears only on the DVD version--like having John Waters himself in your living room narrating the film. If only Bunuel could have done this for Discreet Charm... Well, Bunuel at least left behind two of our favorite books: Conversations With..., and his autobiography, My Last Sigh. And if you haven't read John Waters' established classics, Shock Value and Crackpot, you're definitely in for a treat--and a shake-up of your "aesthetics."-- Vale
